About Us

When and Why to Refer to a Theriogenologist.

A theriogenologist is a veterinarian specializing in reproduction. While it is common to think this field is focused solely on breeding, it really encompasses the health of the entire genitourinary systems, regardless of breeding status or capability. We offer primary and secondary opinions and welcome referrals, either self- or through your primary veterinarian.

For those looking to produce foals, the majority of mares are straightforward to get bred and take on their first cycle. When that isn't working, it is time to turn to more advanced diagnostics and techniques to address a mare's barriers to fertility. While some of this can be accomplished in a field setting by your regular veterinarian, they may recommend a second opinion, special diagnostics or to have the mare managed in an inpatient setting. Intense cycle management is impractical in a field setting.

Many mares in modern breeding programs face particular challenges, such as breeding to a high-demand stallion or a mare that has had a difficult foaling. Some mares throw a wrench in the system and have cycle abnormalities or a history of being difficult to get in foal. Difficult mares are our routine!

Foals--From First Moments On

We love foals and foaling!

If your neonate is not meeting benchmarks from the start or needs extra help to thrive, we provide life-saving urgent care in the field an assess whether intense inpatient care is warranted. Our goal is to be available for foaling emergencies.

Healthy Mares for Healthier Foals

We pay particular attention to the entire mare. Poor or excessive body condition, nutritional deficiencies, lameness, endocrinopathies, and dental issues can all negatively impact fertility, either directly or indirectly. It is important to address wellness issues ahead of the breeding season.
